About ME
What is the similarity between addiction and divorce? Getting caught up in the same repeating life story that doesn’t work.
Honestly, I never thought I would go anywhere near law. I became a counselor with a background in addictions counseling, interning with Denver Rescue Mission through Harvest Farm, before also getting a degree in Divinity, following my passion in one of the least sought after directions of psychology, existential counseling. I like to hear people’s stories, the narration of their lives, and help them to rewrite their understanding of events.
After years of assisting my wife in her legal practice and doing counseling work, collaborative law became the new goal for both of us to work together: Instead of either counseling or divorce, one office or the other, it is now counseling within the divorce process, helping to heal the lines of communication between two people, because, like addictions, the most difficult thing to heal is that which repeats and most marriage problems begin and end with a lack of communication and understanding.
I strive for understanding, having grown up in a Japanese-Filipino home and having a religious history starting from Episcopalian through Latter-Day Saints, Buddhism, and now non-denominational, with friends of wiccan and druidic backgrounds. It has been my experience that miscommunication begins with a lack of understanding in each other. Beliefs we hold about each other can often lead to a deaf ear to the reality of the spoken word.
